Portfolio vs CGPA — What Actually Gets You Hired?

For students and recent graduates, one common career question is whether academic performance or practical experience has a greater impact on employment opportunities. While CGPA remains important in many recruitment processes, a strong portfolio can provide valuable evidence of a candidate’s practical abilities.

CGPA is often used as an initial screening criterion. Many companies, particularly for campus placements and entry-level positions, establish minimum academic requirements. A strong academic record demonstrates consistency, discipline, and the ability to understand theoretical concepts.

However, academic performance alone does not always demonstrate whether a candidate can apply that knowledge in a professional environment.

This is where a portfolio becomes important.

A portfolio allows candidates to demonstrate their ability through practical work. Depending on the field, this could include software projects, marketing campaigns, research work, data analysis, design projects, websites, AI applications, or freelance assignments.

For employers, these projects provide a clearer understanding of how a candidate approaches problems and applies their knowledge.

A strong portfolio also gives candidates better opportunities during interviews. Instead of discussing only academic subjects, candidates can explain the challenges they encountered, the decisions they made, the tools they used, and the results they achieved.

However, having a portfolio does not mean that academic performance should be ignored. Students should maintain a reasonable CGPA while simultaneously developing practical skills. The two can complement each other rather than being treated as competing priorities.

Another important factor is the quality of the portfolio. A large number of projects does not necessarily indicate strong ability. A few relevant and well-developed projects that the candidate genuinely understands can be more valuable than numerous basic or copied projects.

Ultimately, CGPA and portfolio serve different purposes. CGPA can help a candidate meet initial eligibility requirements, while a portfolio can demonstrate practical capability and differentiate the candidate from others.

For students preparing for their careers, the most effective approach is therefore to focus on both academic performance and practical development.

The objective should not simply be to achieve a high CGPA or build an impressive portfolio. It should be to graduate with both a strong academic foundation and clear evidence of the ability to apply that knowledge in real-world situations.
