Ever had to borrow a parent's phone just to pay for canteen food or a metro ride? Paytm's new

Pocket Money feature is here to fix that. It lets teenagers make their own digital payments no bank account required.

What Is It?

Pocket Money is built on NPCI's UPI Circle framework. A parent links their teenager to their own account through the Paytm app, and the teen gets their own independent way to pay straight from their own phone. The money still comes from the parent's account, but the payment itself is made by the student, without borrowing a device, sharing OTPs, or sending QR codes over chat.

How It Works

  1. A parent invites the teen through Paytm's UPI Circle feature.
  2. The parent sets a monthly spending limit.
  3. The teen pays independently for everyday expenses using their own phone.
  4. The parent tracks every transaction in real time and can adjust or revoke access instantly using their UPI PIN.

Safety limits built in: ₹5,000 per transaction, ₹15,000 total per month, no international payments, and no cash withdrawals. It works on both savings and current accounts.

What Can Students Use It For?

  • Canteen payments at school or college
  • Metro rides and cab fares
  • Mobile recharges
  • Online and offline shopping

Basically, the everyday things pocket money is meant for just faster and easier to track.

Why This Is Great for Students

1. Real independence, with a safety net. Students get to manage their own budget instead of asking for money every time but limits and parental visibility keep it responsible.

2. Learn money management by doing it. Paytm's Spend Summary automatically categorizes spending, so students can actually see where their money goes a much better teacher than a wallet of loose cash.

3. Safer than cash. Lost cash is gone forever. A lost phone or suspicious activity? Parents can pause or revoke access in seconds.

4. Everyday convenience. No more waiting on a parent, borrowing phones, or juggling QR codes just open the app and pay.

5. Peace of mind for parents. Parents set the limit, see every transaction, and stay in control so independence doesn't mean losing oversight.

The Bigger Picture

Startups like FamPay and Junio have offered similar products before, but Paytm's version runs directly on UPI the same network already accepted by millions of merchants across India. That means students aren't stuck in a separate system; they're part of the mainstream digital payments world, just with sensible guardrails.

Worth Trying?

If pocket money at home still means cash or borrowed phones, this is worth a look. It's a simple way to bring everyday spending into the digital age while building good money habits early.
