Big news for everyone who runs their business on WhatsApp. Now users can share their profiles using their usernames, without disclosing their phone numbers. But the user should require their phone number to create an account.

As it’s in the initial stage, users and businesses can reserve their username from 3 to 35 characters. This feature has officially rolled out more widely, where the availability of the username depends on your account and country.

Does it Matter for Qualified Business Leads?

For businesses, their phone number will still show, but businesses get unique, searchable usernames to improve discoverability and branding. This means customers could message a recognizable handle like @YourBrand instead of having to remember a phone number. It helps businesses to find leads and reach out to you, and easier for your brand to stay top-of-mind.

Businesses can add their existing Instagram or Facebook usernames on WhatsApp through the Business API as the rollout expands, so if you've already built recognition, you can carry that identity over.

A heads-up for tech/marketing teams:

This isn't just a trend but a major update to WhatsApp API, CRM, and bots to handle the new Business-Scoped User ID (BSUID). If your integration relies exclusively on phone numbers as the primary key, things like Click-to-WhatsApp ad campaigns could stop generating conversations for users who've switched to usernames, then it's worth flagging to your development team.

Usernames could make it simpler for potential leads to discover and message your business without using phone numbers, which helps to open up a stronger brand identity on the platform. This makes your business worth getting your username reserved early before the good handles are taken!

Anyone here already testing this out? Would love to hear how it's working for your business. Please drop your suggestions and thoughts on the new WhatsApp update.
