My First Freelance Projects Didn't Start With Big Clients

When I was trying to get freelance work, I made the same mistake a lot of people make. I kept looking for the “perfect” project - something that would look impressive on my portfolio and pay well from the start.

But honestly, that approach just kept me waiting.

What helped more was taking on smaller projects where I could actually do the work, understand what the client needed, deal with deadlines, and learn how to communicate properly. Some of those projects weren't particularly exciting, but they gave me something more useful than another certificate or real experience I could show to the next person.

One small project became a portfolio example. That project helped me explain what I could actually do. Then the next conversation became easier because I wasn't saying, “I can do this.” I could actually show it.

I think that's the part people underestimate when starting freelancing. Your first project doesn't have to be your dream project. It just needs to give you something real to learn from and build on.

Sometimes the first project isn't about making a lot of money. It's about creating enough proof that the next opportunity becomes easier to get.
