Restaurant Hygiene Ratings: Bringing Food Safety to Food Delivery Apps

When we order food online, we can see ratings, reviews, prices, delivery times, and photos. But there is one important question most platforms do not answer clearly:
How safe and hygienic is the kitchen preparing my food?
This is a growing consumer problem in India. A recent survey of more than 91,000 consumers found that only 32% rated restaurant hygiene and food-safety standards as good or excellent, while 57% said they had personally seen dirty kitchens, dining areas, or washrooms. Even more importantly, 74% wanted restaurant hygiene ratings to be publicly displayed on food-delivery apps.
The Problem
Food-delivery platforms are built around convenience, but consumers still have limited visibility into kitchen safety.
A customer may know that a restaurant has a 4.5-star food rating, but that does not necessarily tell them:
- When the kitchen was last inspected
- Whether it passed its inspection
- What violations were found
- Whether its hygiene certification is current
- Whether the business has repeated safety issues
India already has an FSSAI Hygiene Rating Scheme, which rates eligible food businesses from 1 to 5 stars based on hygiene and food-safety conditions found during inspection. However, the scheme is voluntary.
The Solution: An AI-Powered Kitchen Safety Score
My idea is to create a Kitchen Safety Score directly inside food-delivery platforms.
Instead of relying only on customer reviews, the score could combine verified information such as:
- FSSAI hygiene ratings
- Inspection records
- Food-safety violations
- Certification status
- Inspection recency
- Verified consumer complaints
- Repeat compliance issues
AI would organize and analyze these signals, while official inspections and verified records would remain the foundation of the score.
For example:
Kitchen Safety Score: 89/100
Last Inspection: 12 August 2026
Status: Verified
Risk Level: Low
Consumers could tap the score to understand exactly why a kitchen received it.
Why This Matters
This could create a new layer of trust and transparency in food delivery.
Consumers get better information. Restaurants can demonstrate compliance. Platforms can differentiate themselves through safety transparency.
Food ratings tell us whether people liked the meal. A kitchen safety score could help tell us whether we can trust where it was prepared.
Would you check a verified Kitchen Safety Score before ordering food?
