Understanding the Real Cost of Building with AI
One thing I’ve started paying more attention to while exploring AI products is the cost behind every AI interaction. We often focus on how powerful a model is or how good its output looks, but the economics become equally important when you build and scale an AI product. Factors such as token usage, model selection, infrastructure, context length, and compute costs can significantly affect the overall cost. I also learned that using the most powerful model for every task isn't always practical. Smaller models can handle simpler tasks efficiently, while advanced models can be reserved for more complex use cases. A cost that looks small for a single request can become a major expense when you're processing thousands or millions of requests. My key takeaway is that building a sustainable AI product requires balancing performance, user experience, and cost, not simply choosing the most powerful model available.
