I built an LLM cost calculator. There are already twenty. Tell me why mine should exist.
calculatetoken.com — paste a prompt, pick a model, see what it costs. Built it for developers and engineers.
The problem I can't get past: this is a commodity. OpenAI has a tokenizer. Anthropic has one. There are a dozen free calculators indexed above mine. Someone uses a token calculator once, gets their number, and never comes back. There's no reason to return, so there's no product — just a utility.
What I think is actually wrong:
1. It answers a one-time question. No repeat use, so no habit, so no traffic that isn't paid or SEO.
2. It's not differentiated. Nothing on it that the official tokenizers don't already do.
3. I built the tool before I found the wedge.
Directions I've considered:
Cross-provider comparison — same prompt, cost across GPT / Claude / Gemini / open models, side by side. Useful when you're choosing, but that's still occasional.
Cost projection — not "this prompt costs $0.003" but "this feature at 10,000 monthly users costs $X." Closer to a real decision.
Monitoring — connect an API key, track actual spend over time, alert on spikes. That's a product, but it's a much bigger build and I'd be competing with observability tools.
What I want roasted:
Is there a version of this that people return to weekly, or is a token calculator structurally a one-visit tool that should just be a free lead magnet for something else?
If you've ever used a token calculator — what made you close the tab, and what would have made you bookmark it?
